Battle of Watches: Swiss Holy Trinity vs the World

Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin. Often referred to the swiss "holy trinity" that represents the epitome of horology with a rich history, immaculate finishing, and branding that have became a symbol of status and the ultimate grail watch.

While the quality and history of these exculsive brands are undoubtable, there are other brands could match them in terms of movement and quality. Jaeger-LeCoultre, A Lange & Sohne, and H Moser & Cie are just a few names in the watch industry that should be in the same league of conversation.

What do you guys think? Do you think that the "holy-trinity" will stand? Which brands do you think deserve to have the same level of respect?

I think it's all marketing silliness...

Buy what you like, not what you think will make you more "baller", or whatever the kids are calling it these days.

I love the graphic.  I would take the JLC over the AP, the Lange over the PP, and the Moser over the VC.  Or, rather, I would take the top 3, sell them all, and use the funds to then buy the bottom 3, and use the remaining cash for some Cheetos.

I think we should better call it the “historic Swiss holy trinity”. There is a reason why exactly this watches are in this club from a historic perspective. And adding something now would lead to sayings like, the original holy trinity. Take it as it is. Especially AP has imho not anymore a place there and should be exchanged by Lange. Nowadays they are completely focused on watch design that’s not really holy XD

Lange is not Swiss and todays brand is very young, Moser is even younger and JLC was back in the days known for movements, not for watches.

I brought this up on IG about a year ago cos I just feel there are too many great brands out there for a ‘Holy Trinity’ to still stand.
So I proposed a ‘Magnificent 7’ !

Here are the pics that accompanied my post, who agrees and if not what would you change?

I still don’t understand why these sort of conversations are still had. This “trinity” is just a tired concept now, and trying to come up with a quartet, magnificent 7, or dirty dozen (which exists), is just not helpful and is counter-intuitive. Let’s have another shoot-out with all the major brands? Let’s not…

What do you need when you buy a watch? If you need to own something that screams classic horological heritage then good for you, and you can therefore make your own informed opinion. What should it matter what other people think what you spend your money on.

I can never get enough A. Lange or Moser...everything in your list is amazing, but those two brands are captivating to me.

Exactly, there are other watches as well, independent watch makers who makes phenomenal watches the like of FP Journe and Roger Smith just to name a few! There are also other watch brands like Credor (of Seiko) with the traditional Japanese watches, Parmigiani Fleurier, and MBF that is pushing the borders of horology!

magnificent 7 sounds like a cool idea man!

I am obsessed with the Moser Chrono. A long way off but still

I don't think the Polaris belongs to that group, it's a different style of watch (for me). I agree with all the arguments against the holy trinity concept, I thinks it's too old. Things have changed a lot in the watch world since then, and also, PP and VC have so much more to offer than the Nautilus and Overseas, but I cannot say the same about AP 🙄😂

Thanks! Took me a while to whittle it down to this 7 to be honest. So who would your Magnificent 7 be then?

The Holly Trinity brands are still doing great, if you look at the Morgan Stanley report for Swiss watch industry in 2021.  If having to pick 3 challengers, I will have Lange, FP. Journe and Rolex.

That Lange Odysseus....OMGosh I love it and need one!

·

I respect all of them and they all look like great watches. At that price point, it comes down to what pleases you, of which my answer is the Vacheron. Their watches are more my style, which in a way is sad because I don't know that I'll ever be able to afford one.

This is just personal taste/opinion, but I totally don’t get the elevation of these three brands and don’t care for Genta style sport watches.

  • Does AP even make something other than the Royal Oak? And I don’t care for the Royal Oak’s design.
  • Patek has some beautiful but overpriced watches. The Nautilus is overpriced, but not beautiful to me.
  • VC… The 1921 is absolutely gorgeous. Not price of a nice car gorgeous, but gorgeous.

JLC catches my eye more than any of the Trinity.

I guess what I’m saying is that if I want a new watch that looks like it should have been left in the 1970s, I’d get a Tissot. But I’m not buying a Tissot, either, because 70s design appeals to me about as much as an AMC Pacer or Gremlin.

Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the 73 Porsche 911 RS, and Star Wars IV are the only cultural contributions of the 70s that I care about.
